Are You Ready For Storms?

When Dealing with Leaks, Take the Following Steps to Minimize Damage:
- Clean up any puddles – standing water will soak in to wood and lead to permanent damage, warping and eventual rot.
- Catch drips – yep, the old bucket under the drip. You want to capture any drips you see so that puddles don’t form
- Find the source of the leak NOW!
- Fix the leak ASAP
The important thing is to find what’s causing the leak. Most rain induced leaks start in the roof. You do NOT want to be climbing around the slippery wet roof during a rainstorm.
Here’s a quick check-list of what to look at when dealing with a roof leak:
- Find where the leak is on the ceiling of the room below. That will lead you to a puddle or soaked insulation in the attic.
- Look for water stains, drip marks, etc. on the rafters above the wet insulation.
- Trace the water up the rafter. It should point right at the leak in the roof.
- Check chimneys where they cut through the roof. Mark the area at the highest point where you see the leak start. This is invaluable for whomever has to fix the leak.
If you do narrow it down to a roof leak, you will need to contact a roofer to fix the leak, and SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski and Fulton counties can handle the water damage.
If you have water damage in your home, give us a call at 574-936-5849 and a technician will come and check it out!

Do You Know Who To Call First After Severe Storm Damage?
5/9/2022 (Permalink)
A severe storm can cause a lot of damage. Trees can fall, debris can wreak havoc and the ground can become saturated quickly. If your home floods as the result of a storm, having flood insurance can help cover the cost of storm restoration services. The following tips can help you file a flood claim with your insurance company so that you don't have to pay remediation expenses out of pocket.
Make Important Calls
The first thing you need to do is to call everyone who may need to be involved in resolving the flooding problem:
- Government office in charge of city sewer system
- Insurance company
- Certified flood cleanup professionals
When a large portion of your area floods, it can affect the city's sewer lines, and officials need to know if you are experiencing any problems. Notifying your insurance carrier prompts an adjuster to visit your home and analyze the damage listed on your insurance claim. Arranging for technicians to arrive as soon as possible helps you prevent further water damage to your home.
Document Damage
To file a successful flood claim, you need proof of all the damage the flooding causes. Don't wait until your adjuster to arrives to document it. Take pictures and video so that you have evidence of the initial state of your home after the flood. After cleanup technicians arrive and pump the excess water out of your home, take more pictures of the water damage and make an itemized list of all the items that must be restored or replaced. Having information ready when the adjuster arrives can help you make a more detailed claim.
If the area where your home is located floods, you may not be able to avoid water damage. Knowing whom to call and the immediate steps to take can help you file a successful flood claim.
So give us a call! We are faster to any disaster and are here to help make things "Like it never even happened."

Three Ways To Use Landscaping To Protect Your Home From Water Damage
5/1/2022 (Permalink)
Heavy rains or extreme storms can drop thousands of gallons of water on your yard over the course of a winter season, potentially leaving behind outside flooding or overflowing drainage in their wake. Therefore, it’s important to prepare for any intense rainstorm by finding ways to properly divert rain drainage away from your property. Here are three ways to use your outdoor landscaping to protect your home from the brunt of oncoming excess water and keep it outside where it belongs.
1. Be creative with your mulch. If you’ve created any garden or plant beds around the exterior of your home, there are preventative measures you can take to effectively ward off flooding issues. Use heavier mulch that absorbs more of the water within itself as opposed to allowing it to run toward the walls of the house. Furthermore, it’s best to leave a 6-inch gap between your mulch and siding so that any excess water doesn’t wick up and into the exterior siding of your home.
2. Direct rainwater spouts away from the house. In the event of a rainstorm, your drainage spouts work to keep water flowing freely off of your roof and away from your exterior paneling. However, it’s important to extend these downspouts as much as possible to keep any outside flooding from building right next to your home.
3. Use grass or rock formations as barriers. If your family has experienced countless flooding problems in your basement, cellar or even surrounding your doorways, it helps to create a landscaping barrier in areas that are prone to excess water buildup. Incorporate added grass to help absorb and block, or enhance the space with a decorative rock path to break up the runoff and keep it from collecting.
While outside flooding isn’t always preventable, there are certainly ways to help prevent excess water from building around the exterior of your home. These three methods can be useful in safeguarding your property without taking away from the beauty of your landscape. For more information give us a call! (574) 936-5849.
What You Can Do If You Have A Home Fire (Part 1 of 2)
4/27/2022 (Permalink)
While we all hope we never have to suffer through the experience of a house fire, it is important to know what to do if one should happen. Obviously, the first thing you should do is ensure the fire has been extinguished completely.
This can be done by someone in the home if the fire is small and can be put out easily and safely. Or by the fire department if the fire is too big and dangerous to safely extinguish by the homeowner. It’s important to note that it’s always best to call the fire department right as soon as a fire is spotted and to get everyone out of the home quickly and safely.
The Fire is Out. Now What?
While you may be anxious to start cleaning after a fire, you may be doing more damage than good. Normal household cleaners can be ineffective at removing soot and smoke -- and could even make it worse. It’s best to contact fire damage repair and restoration professionals, like those at SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski and Fulton counties, to get advice on what needs to be done and what not to do.
Fire damage repair and restoration professionals will be able to tell you what can be cleaned, what can be repaired, and what needs to be replaced. They will be able to give you estimates on what services need to be done in order to remove all fire and smoke damage, including smoke odors, from your home.
Airing and Drying Things Out
One of the first things a fire repair company will do is get the smoke and moisture out of the air. This can be done with fans and dehumidifiers. Once the fire is out and you’re allowed to go back inside, you can open some windows near where the fire occurred to help start airing the smoke out of the house.
The other concern is water damage to your carpets and floors. This is usually a result of the fire department extinguishing the fire. If your carpets and floors are wet, it’s important to remove the water and moisture and quickly as possible. If not dried out, carpets and floors can occur further damage from mold and mildew.
Professional fire damage repair companies will usually vacuum out as much water as possible and then use fans and dehumidifiers to dry the carpets and floors out. They may also pull up the carpets to help dry out the padding underneath.
Battling Soot Before It Causes Worse Damage
Soot can be a huge menace to carpets, drapes, and upholstery. It can easily stain fabrics and cause further staining using standard cleaning materials. The soot must be removed before using fabric cleaners. It’s also important to limit traffic across carpet and floors that have soot on it.
What You Can Do If You Have A Home Fire (Part 2 of 2)
4/27/2022 (Permalink)
Dealing With Smoke Odor In Fabrics
One of the most difficult things to get out of fabrics and porous materials is the smoke odor. Smoke odor can adhere to carpets, dust in air ducts, drapes, and furniture. Normal household cleaners and detergents usually won’t remove all of the smoke odors. To remove the smoke odors many times require special counteractants that are formulated to break up the smoke molecules in the fabrics and materials.
A professional fire repair company will be able to help with that. They will be able to apply these chemical and/or additive counteractants to carpets, fabrics and other porous materials to break up the smoke molecules. Once they are broken up, then they can be professionally cleaned.
Sometimes ozone treatments are needed to break up the smoke molecules and remove the odors. This is usually done with ozone generators which be dangerous if misused. Ozone treatments are another of many tools and treatments that a fire repair company will be able to help with if needed.
Treating Discolored Walls and Ceilings
Removing soot from walls and ceilings is another difficult task that is best left up to a professional. Professional fire damage repair companies will have the right tools and treatments to remove the soot without causing further damage or stains. Many will use special sponges to remove the soot. Others will use non-water based cleaners to remove the soot. Again when dealing with smoke and soot stains on walls and ceilings it’s best to consult a professional fire damage repair company.

What To Do When Water Damage Effects Your Business
4/22/2022 (Permalink)
When you’re running a business, flood water is the last thing you want to deal with,. However, sometimes it’s unavoidable when bad weather or faulty plumbing strikes. The key to combating flooding is understanding exactly what you’re dealing with before disaster strikes. These are the most important points to remember when it comes to flooding:
• Flood water is considered black water, or a category 3 issue.
• Black water contains a number of threats.
• You require professional help to clean up black water correctly.
Black Water
Flood waters are rated on a scale depending on the source of the flooding. Clean water comes from burst water lines and other clean sources, gray water results from broken showers and other potentially chemical-carrying sources, and black water results from storm damage and other, potentially more dangerous sources. Understanding which type you’re dealing with is vital when it comes to keeping yourself and your employees safe during floods.
The Dangers
Out of the three categories, black water is the most dangerous by far. Floods resulting from storm damage are considered as a category 3 issue because they tend to carry sewage, chemicals, diseases and bacteria that they pick up from outdoor spaces. Avoiding direct contact with this water is imperative to avoid the transmission of illnesses and other serious issues.
Professional Help
While there are a few steps you can take to reduce the immediate damage of black water in your business, you should never attempt to handle the issue alone and without professional equipment. Allowing a professional cleanup crew to take care of your flooding issue is the best way to promote a safe work environment while getting the results you need to get your business operations back on track.
In the business world, informing yourself about an issue is always important when it comes to making smart decisions. This applies to dealing with emergencies such as flooding in the workplace. Prepare to deal with black water the right way, and never let yourself or your employees be caught off-guard.

4/21/2022 (Permalink)
Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.
Smoke and soot facts:
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski & Fulton County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Water Damage To Your Commercial Business Can Lead To Lots Of Problems
4/16/2022 (Permalink)
Water damage to your Indianapolis business can lead to lots of problems. It can ruin electronics like computers or even worse, cause a short which could lead to a fire. Water can also ruin any porous materials including fabric chairs and couches, carpets, drywall, ceilings, insulation and, wood. If not caught right away and remediated, it can also lead to mold growth that can spread quickly through the air ducts and through the air.
If you do experience water damage to your business, then you want to call the water damage experts at SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski and Fulton counties as soon as possible. When it comes to water damage, the faster you catch it and get it dried up and cleaned up, the better. Even the smallest leak can lead to lots of damage that may be hidden behind ceilings and walls.
Top Causes of Commercial Water Damage & How to Reduce the Risks
Below we will cover the top causes of water damage to businesses. We will also go over how to reduce the risk or at the very least catch the water damage quickly before it gets worse. Hopefully by understanding where water can enter into your building and cause water and mold damage, the better you will be at checking these trouble areas on a regular basis.
Faulty Appliances and Equipment
If your business has appliances and/or equipment that use water, they can develop water leaks that can start small but lead to lots of damage if not caught. These appliances could be dishwashers, sinks, ice machines, water fountains, water heaters, air conditioners, and toilets.
All of these, except for the toilet, tend to leak what is termed clean water. Clean water is water that usually contains no contaminants. While clean water can still cause significant water damage to porous materials, it doesn’t have as high of a risk of fast-growing molds occurring. The water can still mix with contaminants once it starts leaking from the source which usually results in gray water. Gray water can carry bacteria and contaminants that can promote fast mold growth.
To reduce the risk of water leaks from your appliances and equipment, it’s usually a good idea to check all piping, tubes, filters, and other areas that may cause leaking. Also, do a spot check around the appliances and under them for any standing water or water stains.
Leaky and Backed Up Pipes & Drains
Leaks from sewer pipes and backups from drains is also a common cause of water damage to a business. This could be a backed up toilet or a clogged pipes that cause water to back up and escape through the drains. Also common in flood-prone areas is sewer water backing up through floor drains from sewer lines that are at capacity and overflowing.
The water from these sources tends to be gray water or black water. Black water is sewer water that can contain all types of waste particles that may be dangerous to one’s health and can also lead to fast mold growth. This is usually where you will find dangerous black molds occurring. If you experience water damage from black water, it’s important to call the water damage experts at SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski and Fulton counties as soon as possible. Black water can also be found in severe floods.
Roof Leaks
A leaking roof is common in homes and businesses throughout Indiana. With many businesses, the roof is usually flat. If the drainage for the roof is blocked, water can pool up and cause a roof collapse. Even if the drainage is fine, water can still find its way inside through cracks and damage to the roof membrane, flashing, and damages to seals around pipes and vents.
To reduce the risk of leaks from your roof, it’s a good idea to check the roof every few months for any deteriorating seals or storm damage. If you experience extreme weather like hails or high winds, then you want to check the roof as soon as it is safe to ensure the weather has caused any damages to the roof that may lead to leaks.

Things You Need To DO If Fire Damage Hits Your Home
4/16/2022 (Permalink)
A fire in your home can be devastating. Avoid the risk of injury, smoke and property damage by knowing the most common causes of electrical fires:1. Old Wiring - Did you know that the lifespan of electrical systems in homes is 30-40 years but more than 30% of the nation's homes are more than 50 years old? Signs that your home's wiring may need to be updated include an over-reliance on extension cords and circuit breakers that blow or fuses that need to be replaced constantly. Consult with a reputable electrician to find out what updates your home needs to be safe.
2. Space Heaters - These portable heaters are not designed for long-term use. Portable heating devices should never be placed near combustible surfaces such as clothing, curtains, rugs, bedding or furniture. If you choose to utilize a space heater, look for a model that stays cool to the touch and has a built in automatic shut-off feature in case it is accidentally covered or left on.
3. Old, Outdated Appliances - Never use an appliance that has a worn or frayed cord. Never remove the grounding plug from a cord so that it can be used in a 2 prong outlet. That extra prong is designed to only be used with an outlet that can accommodate the extra electricity that this appliance draws.
Even when taking precautions, electrical fires can occur and have devastating consequences in your home or workplace. If you experience fire or smoke damage, call SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski & Fulton counties at 574-936-5849 day or night to speak with an experienced restoration specialist.

How To Protect Your Home When Heavy Rain & Storms Hit

Heavy rains or extreme storms can drop thousands of gallons of water on your yard over the course of a winter season, potentially leaving behind outside flooding or overflowing drainage in their wake. Therefore, it’s important to prepare for any intense rainstorm by finding ways to properly divert rain drainage away from your property. Oh My Oh My! Water & Thunder & Lightening

Every summer, the U.S. goes through an “active weather” season. The middle of spring through summer is a prime time for hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, thunderstorms, and fires. Here at SERVPRO, we’ve already begun to see the impact of the severe weather. In Indiana, we have already experienced a massive amount of rain, not to mention a few thunderstorms! Luckily, our SERVPRO team is here for any natural disaster. We respond to water, wind and fire damage! Here are some weather events to look out for during the spring and summer months:
- Hurricanes–Hurricanes, with the accompanying wind, water, and flood, cause a lot of destruction in areas where they hit. When hurricanes gather strength, buildings, trees, and water infrastructures are commonly destroyed. The storms can also knock down power lines, posing a risk of electrocution.
- Tornadoes– Tornadoes are characterized by whirling winds and debris and can endanger life and property. They are common from spring until the middle of summer but can occur any time of the year.
- Floods– Floods are becoming more common in the U.S., with flash floods as the top weather-related killer. A few inches of water could bring extensive damage to homes and buildings. Heavy rains, levee breaches, and tsunamis cause floods. Many floods occur in areas that cannot absorb rainwater.
- Fires– The heat of the summer and the years of drought experienced in many parts of the country can precipitate massive forest fires that, in many instances, affect dwellings. Spontaneous combustion, volcanic eruption, and faulty electrical wires are other common causes of fires.
Call SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski & Fulton Counties if you are ever in need after a natural disaster! We can help make it "Like it never even happened."
When It Comes To Recovering From Storm Damage - Why Call SERVPRO?
3/27/2022 (Permalink)
Although no one can stop the rains, there are ways to limit flooding in your home. Overland flooding or backups due to overwhelmed storm sewage systems are but two of the sources of floodwaters in the lower levels of your home. Regardless of the source of the water, we have the technicians and the equipment to help you recover.
Even though the water causing flood damage to your home may be drawing your eyes down as it seeps into the foundation or lower levels, the problem often is at the roofline. Clogged gutters and damaged downspouts cause water to pound down near the perimeter of your home, saturating the soil and ultimately invading through the slab, poured, or cinder block foundation. We can respond to and restore the damage but expect suggestions from our managers or production crew to minimize or even eliminate future flooding.
The grading and landscaping around your home can also contribute to the seepage of floodwaters into the foundation. Over time even correctly graded ground can erode and shift, encouraging rainwater to drain into your home rather than away from it. SERVPRO crews also see scenarios where plantings surrounding your home contribute to excess water moving into the porous materials making up the base and protecting the lower levels of your house. Irrigation systems or merely an overdone watering of foundation gardens have the unhappy result of a wet home.
SERVPRO evaluates the characteristics of the water flooding into your home to determine whether it needs to be contained and disposed of according to local regulations. The sooner you get our team to your home the more likely that the water checks out as Category 1. If the soil around your home is loose, dirt particles can flow in with the water. Lawn chemicals, fertilizers, and even pet wastes can taint the water, requiring careful handling. Gutter overflow can also contain bird and animal waste and mold, threatening the flooded area with microbial growth if not disinfected and dried out after the flood water evacuates.
Submersible pumps and water extractors pull most of the flood water out of your home. If Category 1 we can drain it outside, but take care to deposit far from the house to prevent it from flooding again. We use moisture meters and infrared scanners to locate hidden pockets of moisture and to set a baseline for drying goals. SERVPRO crews position air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers to dry out the affected space. The moisture numbers are monitored to ensure we achieve standard levels.
The team at SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski & Fulton has the necessary training and experience to remediate seepage-based flooding. Do not hesitate to call us if we can help!
Have Smoke and Soot Cleanup? SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski & Fulton County Can Help!
2/7/2022 (Permalink)
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Our Fire Damage Restoration Services
Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.
The Dangers of DIY Sewage Cleanup & Why If This Happens To Call SERVPRO!
2/5/2022 (Permalink)
The Dangers of DIY Sewage Cleanup
If you’re like most homeowners, when faced with a task or question you probably head to the internet for answers…that’s how you found this article! And if you’re dealing with backed-up sewage, it only takes a few seconds of searching to find hundreds of articles describing how to clean-up sewage.
It goes like this:
** Put on some rubber gloves
** Scoop out the waste
** Take some water and bleach solution and apply it to the affected areas
** Let it dry
Most articles will throw out a warning saying “if you’re not sure whether you can do it, or don’t have the proper equipment, it is best to call a professional”. That’s where you would call SERVPRO.
We’d like to throw out another warning!
Cleaning up raw sewage on your own is something you should never do!
Here’s why:
#1 – It can be hidden. – Any SERVPRO crew member can tell you stories about customers that decided to clean-up their own feces only to call in weeks or months later complaining about smells and disfigured walls, cabinets, and floors. Sewage will find its way into any and all porous surfaces. Even things like drywall and cabinetry aren’t safe. And it’s not as simple as just spotting the sewage with your eyes. It requires state of the art equipment, which SERVPRO has, to identify areas that have been damaged by sewage. So unless you have an infrared detection system handy and know how to use it, call SERVPRO.
#2 – It can be costly. – Times are difficult for everyone and money is tight. It’s easy to justify doing it yourself instead of paying to have SERVPRO clean and disinfect for you. But today’s shortcut is tomorrow’s nightmare! If sewage cleanup is not properly mitigated, you could be looking at a serious mold issue in the not so distant future. And if you think sewage cleanup is costly, wait until you’re stuck with a bill for mold remediation services! At least your sewage clean-up is covered by insurance…that’s not typically the case if you’ve got mold and it’s the result of you not taking appropriate measures when dealing with the sewage issue that created the mold!
So, if you’ve stumbled upon this article due to a sewage back-up that’s spilled into your home or office, do yourself a favor and call us, SERVPRO. Our technicians are certified to perform raw sewage cleanup and can provide you with peace of mind knowing the area affected is professionally cleaned.

From Flooding To Water & Mold Damage

The area was contained to prevent spreading the mold, deconstruction, clean up and the drying process was started within a few hours.
Following the 500 year flood in February of 2018 thousands of homes were initiated with water, caused by a record snow fall, then the fast melt when we received a record rain fall. The St. Joseph River has a flood level of 5'6", this year it hit 33'. Water entered homes in many ways. This home had water enter through a crack in the foundation at surface level. The water came through the flowed down the wall damaging the drywall, insulation and stud work. Unfortunately the home owner was not in town during the storm; the basement sat 2.5 weeks before anyone noticed the damage. In that time mold had begun to grow on the entirety of the damaged area compounding the damage and clean up. SERVPRO responded to the call in less than an hour. The area was contained to prevent spreading the mold, deconstruction, clean up and the drying process was started within a few hours. SERVPRO will make it "Like it never even happened."

Dissecting Biohazard Cleanup: Understanding the Process and Reducing Risk
When compared to a fire or water loss, property damage resulting from a suicide, murder or unattended death poses greater risk and complexity for the adjuster, the biohazard cleanup company, and of course, the policyholder. Many cleaning and restoration companies will offer bioremediation services, but only those that specialize in this area, like SERVPRO truly understand the science and intricacies of the bioremediation and decontamination process. In order to minimize risk for the insurance carrier and ensure the safety of the policy holder, it’s important to realize the inherent challenges of bioremediation and the processes and standards that every biohazard cleanup professional must adhere to.
Am I liable for an improper biohazard cleanup?
At some point in their careers, insurance professionals may have experienced sticker shock from a bioremediation claim. How could the biohazard cleanup of a single room cost more than recovering an entirely flooded home? It might be tempting to retain a trusted property damage restoration company at a lower cost, but doing so may put the insurer at risk for a lawsuit.
Consider a recent case where a general cleaning company was hired to sanitize a home after 600 pounds of deer meat rotted in a family’s garage due to a power outage. Following the cleaning, the homeowners reported that the rotting stench still remained throughout the house and that some family members became ill. Experts who were brought in to investigate the situation determined that the enduring smell and sickness resulted from inefficiencies in the cleaning process, such as the failure to seal concrete surfaces.
Why is bioremediation so complex?
Many biohazard situations pose grave health risks to policy holders and cleanup companies because of the potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens. One out of every 24 people has Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C or HIV and these pathogens can survive in a deceased person for a considerable amount of time – up to 16 days after death, depending on the temperature and surrounding environment. Exposure to bloodborne viruses can occur due to direct contact with non-intact skin, accidental injury from biological fragments, inhalation and exposure from splashes of blood or bio fluid to the eyes, nose, or mouth. Considering the health risks, bioremediation specialists must follow stringent employee safety regulations and meticulous decontamination procedures that most cleanup crews are not accustomed to.
Separately, biohazard situations can lead to hidden dangers that an average property restoration technician might not even consider. For example, in a water damage emergency, floor boards and drywall might be removed because they are visibly warped and unsalvageable. Then the rest of the structure can be dried out. In contrast, blood can seep through grout and in-between floorboards, even through subflooring. There is no other way to clean the damage but to remove all affected materials – if new wood floors are installed over the blood spill or if tiles are simply wiped down, the remaining bio matter can spread disease, release odors and further damage the property.

How do I evaluate a bioremediation provider?
To determine whether or not a company is qualified to handle a biohazard situation, insurance professionals need a deeper understanding of proper bioremediation standards and what it takes to fully decontaminate a property. These are the key things to inquire about when choosing a vendor for a biohazard cleanup:
OSHA Compliance – These regulations are in place to protect the biohazard company employees and to prevent injury and potential liability for all involved. All supervisors and field technicians should be trained in the following OSHA programs: Bloodborne Pathogens, Personal Protective Equipment, Hazard Communication, Asbestos Awareness, Heat Illness, Fall Protection, Lift Safety, Lock Out – Tag Out, and Power Tool Safety. A common misstep among restoration companies is that they only comply with the OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standards, instead of all the aforementioned areas.
EPA and State Environmental Agency Compliance – The disposal of medical waste must be in accordance with federal, state and/or local regulations. Not all biohazard remediation companies are licensed to transport or store medical waste so it’s essential to understand if/how they comply with the local and national standards. The cleaning company can incur hefty fines if medical waste is not disposed of properly. Also, employees need to be trained in the proper use of cleaning agents – this can be more complicated than it seems, as many agents will become inactive if not measured and diluted properly.
Reporting/Testing – A reputable company should be able to deliver a detailed report which catalogs every step of the cleanup process. This should include photos of the entire process as well, so the policy holder and adjuster understand why some structural materials needed to be removed, what was disposed, why the employees went through a certain amount of protective equipment, etc. They should also have equipment available to check for non-visible but active biological fluids and other contaminants so that it is certain when an area is considered disinfected.
Sensitivity Training – Dealing with a flood or fire can be extremely traumatic, but it does not compare to the loss of loved one. During these traumatic situations, the family members often stay at home so it is imperative that the workers in their home are compassionate and considerate. The biohazard cleanup specialists at SERVPRO understand the need for the family to deal with only one point person in order to avoid confusion or conflicting updates. They have been trained to eliminate alarming language from their vocabulary and speak empathetically with the policyholder.
When it comes to biohazard remediation, there is no quick solution. The fact that there are no laws protecting policy holders through a biohazard cleaning process puts the responsibility on the insurance carrier to work with bioremediation specialists who follow strict safety standards and cleanup procedures. If the insurance carrier directs the cleanup process and even one of the above points is neglected, they might be held liable for any further health and property damages resulting from the improper cleanup. It is important to remember that you can’t put a price tag on the peace of mind that a policy holder needs after a traumatic crime or death occurred in their home or place of business.

Ask The Experts: What should I do if a pipe bursts in my business?
6/7/2021 (Permalink)
Bursting pipes can occur without warning and can devastate homes. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed when an issue suddenly occurs in your home, but knowing what to do if a pipe bursts can help you react in a timely manner.
1. Stop the Flowing Water
A burst pipe can allow huge amounts of water to come into your house in a very short period of time, and more water in your home will likely mean more damage. Using the shutoff valve, which is often located in basements or garages, will turn off the water to your entire house. Other issues may also require you to turn off the water in your home, so it’s generally helpful to know how to cut off the supply of water before any problems arise.
2. Turn Off the Power
The amount of water bursting pipes can bring into the home can create electrical hazards. In order to keep yourself safe and to minimize the risk of an electrical fire, it’s generally wise to turn off the power to your residence. Additionally, it’s often best not to touch any items that use electricity or any electrical outlets even after you have turned off your home’s power.
3. Ask for Help
After the water is no longer flowing into your home and your home no longer has power, it’s often best to contact a plumber and water damage restoration expert. A plumber can fix the broken pipe and can assess your other tubes to make sure they aren’t also at risk of bursting. Restoration specialists can assist you in removing water from your home and can restore personal belongings that were damaged by the water.
It’s often helpful for homeowners to know what to do if a problem such as bursting pipes occurs. Stopping the flow of water, turning off your home’s power and contacting professionals in restoration can help to decrease the cost, time and stress spent dealing with a burst pipe.
So give us a call today! We are faster to any disaster and are ready to help make things "Like it never even happened."
Ask The Experts: Should I contact a professional for flood damage?
6/6/2021 (Permalink)
Surviving a flood on your property should always be the first step, dealing with what gets left behind can come later. However, cleaning and restoration are often overwhelming for most homeowners to tackle on their own. You need the right tools, equipment, and resources to treat flood damage in your home correctly and be aware of the possible health risks involved in the work.
Floods can be emotionally and physically exhausting. However, as soon as you get word from local authorities about receding water flow and receive an all-clear about returning to your home after a flood, contact a restoration company. Flood damage in your home only gets worse the longer you wait, get help documenting the damage and start on your home's recovery right away.
Just remember, never enter your home alone. Have a qualified professional with you that can help you avoid causing further damage and any possible hazards that might exist. Flood waters often drag anything and everything along with it, causing contamination to be a primary concern. Without the proper equipment, you can expose members of your family to biological and chemical waste.
SERVPRO helps you get debris and damaged household goods out of your home quickly and efficiently. With an expedited debris removal process, items that would otherwise sit on your lawn for weeks, or even months, get hauled away immediately under normal circumstances. It also gives our technicians the room they need to begin work on the inside of your home.
SERVPRO gives you a better chance of restoring furniture, appliances, electronics, and personal belongings caught up in the event. Ask The Experts: Is it dangerous to clean up after a flood?
6/6/2021 (Permalink)
When flood damage originates from a storm, we usually classify the waters as either gray or black and handle them with safety protocols based on that classification. Whichever category the standing water in your home falls into does not depend solely on the color or visual appearance of the water, but also on the contents of it and any debris contained within. Here is a brief overview of what goes into each classification, and what each one can mean for your home.
Black Water
Black water is the most severe category of floodwater and is what we deal with most often for cases of flood damage that result from a storm. Black water is any water heavily contaminated with dirt, debris, microorganisms, chemicals, and many more hazardous substances. Most of the time, this type of water should be easy to identify with a dark brown or black color and murky appearance, but heavily contaminated water can sometimes appear gray or even somewhat clear in certain lighting conditions. Wait for a SERVPRO professional to evaluate the situation before you conclude what type of water is in your home. If you do find standing black water anywhere in the building, avoid the room or area in question until one of our technicians can provide you with safety advice. This type of water can be highly dangerous, so be very cautious around it.
Gray Water
Less commonly, SERVPRO technicians may identify floodwaters in your home as gray water, which is a category of water that still contains contaminants but is not as immediately dangerous or severe as black water. However, gray water can still harbor dangerous microorganisms and rapidly develop into black water as these organisms grow and multiply. Be very cautious around all standing water on your property, and avoid entering pools of water without the express permission of our personnel.

SERVPRO tackled the aftermath of a fire in a warehouse. The SERVPRO team traveled to help clean and repair the aftermath of a large fire. This fire left water damage along with soot everywhere inside the building. In this instance, the warehouse was heavily stocked with supplies. The SERVPRO team brought in a crew strictly for inventory management. There are many things that the SERVPRO team does well when it comes to the restoration business. One of the many things our team members try to take care of is the items that were in the property when disaster occurs. Our team logs every item they feel that can be saved.
One of the things that SERVPRO really focused on in this warehouse was the cleaning. Soot coated the ceilings in the warehouse. In this picture, we are seen cleaning all of the soot from the ceilings. Fortunately, the warehouse was able to stay open for hours of operation after the fire.

Water Damage Can Be Overwhelming, But SERVPRO Is Here For You!
5/1/2021 (Permalink)
Do you have a small roof leak or a water spot on the floor where bathwater splashes? While those little leaks and water stains may seem inconsequential, huge damage and potential health effects could be hidden underneath the surface. So what are the signs you should be looking for of further water damage to your Indianapolis home?
If you have a small water stain on your ceiling, you first want to determine where the water came from. If you have access, above the ceiling like an attic, you can get up there and look for signs of a water leak from the roof or a leaking pipe. Even condensation from a pipe can cause water to drip and stain a ceiling over time. The source of the water leak is not always right above the water stain. Water from a leak can travel down the wood framing, across wires, along pipes and other structural pieces behind your home's ceilings and walls.
If you are unable to look behind the wall or ceiling, you may want to call water damage restoration experts like us at SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski and Fulton counties. We have the expertise and tools to examine the full extent of the water damage and determining the best steps to take to repair the water damage and stop any further damage from happening.
Another sign beside a water stain of water damage is a soft spot on your home's walls, ceilings or floors. This happens a lot around bathtubs, kitchen sinks, windows and external walls. While there might not always be a water stain or obvious sign of a water leak, a spot where you can push in on the floor or wall or ceiling can be a sign of water damage that is hidden below the surface. This could be an easy restoration or a potentially difficult one where there could be mold damage and extensive damage to the house's structure.
In any case, the sooner you call us, the faster the damage can be stopped and repaired. When we come to a home with potential water damage, we work quickly to identify the source of the water damage, the areas of the home that have been affected, and the steps to take immediately to stop the water leak and restore the water damaged areas "Like it never even happened."
While a simple roof leak or water stain can be covered up, the unseen damage that mopping up the water or painting over the water stain can't fix could be even worse and getting worse as time goes by. Don't risk damaging your home from water by ignoring or covering up the problem. Call us immediately so we can find and stop any further damage from happening to your home and to your health.

When it comes to fire damage, SERVPRO is here for you from beginning to end
4/27/2021 (Permalink)

First Comes Fire, Then Smoke & Soot-SERVPRO Can Help With All 3
4/16/2021 (Permalink)
Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski & Fulton Counties will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Ask The Experts: The Importance of Generator Safety
4/7/2021 (Permalink)
If you have a generator on hand for power outages during severe weather storms, follow the safety tips below from the American Red Cross:
Never use a generator, grill or camp stove, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawl space, or any partially enclosed area.
To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use in rain or wet conditions. Do not touch the generator with wet hands.
Opening doors or windows and using fans will not prevent carbon monoxide (CO) buildup in the home. Although CO can’t be seen or smelled, it can rapidly lead to full incapacitation and death.
Even if you cannot smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed to CO. If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak while using a generator, get to fresh air immediately.
Install CO alarms in central locations on every level of your home or property and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.
If your home or business suffers from any type of storm damage, call SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski & Fulton and we will send a professional out to assist with getting your property back to its original state as soon as possible.

Why SERVPRO? Because Time Is Money!
11/11/2020 (Permalink)
There's nothing quite as difficult for a commercial establishment as dealing with water damage. However, knowing what to do when disaster strikes can prevent you from experiencing unnecessary emotional upsets for yourself, your employees, and your customers and mitigate the economic strain of lost business. There are many steps you'll need to take to get your commercial property back in order following a water damaging event. Contacting a team of skilled water damage restoration experts from SERVPRO is a good first step.
Quick Water Removal Mitigates Monetary Loss
The longer excess water remains on your commercial property, the more likely you are to suffer from costly water damage repairs to structural properties like ceiling tiles, insulation, drywall, and flooring. Then there is the concern of water damage to your capital investments: inventory, furniture, carpeting, electronic equipment and paper documents. Having a team of skilled water damage restoration experts like SERVPRO to begin immediately removing standing water can prevent you from spending unnecessary money on repairs.
Quick Remediation Prevents Secondary Water Damage.
Another benefit of a quick reaction to the pressing problem of water intrusion is that fast extraction helps prevent secondary water damage. Unfortunately, water damage creates a moist, wet environment within your business. Moisture and high humidity offer mold an opportunity to grow and spread throughout structural materials and wood furniture and fabrics. If your business deals with food distribution, high inventory loss may be a costly negative effect. For this reason, it's critically important to have standing water removed as quickly as possible. SERVPRO can arrive, usually in about one hour, with water removal equipment to meet any problem.
Fast Restoration Helps You Get Back In Business
If the water intrusion, by way of a storm, flood, leak, or the aftermath of fire extinguishing causes severe water damage to your commercial business, you may have to relocate temporarily while water damage restoration work is being completed. Closed doors affect customer traffic, employee earnings, and your bottom line. Insurance companies normally work hand-in-hand with SERVPRO to come to a working agreement allowing the water extraction process to commence immediately.
Contact SERVPRO Today
If your commercial property has been subjected to water damage, getting fast, effective water damage restoration services is a must. Here at SERVPRO, we specialize in optimizing and expediting each component of the restoration process to ensure that you can get your business back in business. Why SERVPRO? The Importance of Getting Things Done The Right Way
11/11/2020 (Permalink)
The Importance of Hiring Professional Carpet Cleaners
Professional carpet cleaners are the only people who should be trusted to do the job. Anyone with less experience or certification will likely not do the job correctly. And their carelessness could end up costing a lot more in the end.
Carpeting is typically one of the most long-term investments in the home. Most people associate high-cost flooring with tile, marble or hardwood, but carpet can carry a high price tag as well. There are various fibers and matting to choose from, as well as the padding beneath it. When it’s all said and done, it can cost just as much if not more than some other options. Once that investment is installed, great care should be taken to keep it in the best condition possible. This will mean regular vacuuming in high-traffic areas and regular maintenance from professional carpet cleaners.
Why should someone always hire professional carpet cleaners?
Professionally trained technicians have certification in all types of fibers and construction, so they know which products and equipment to use and how to employ them properly. The technician can assess the area for any spot treatment that may be necessary and will know which tools and specialized products to use. They will also be aware of the correct methods to complete the job effectively. Technicians will also inform the customer of ways that they can prolong the life of their carpeting and how to properly treat spills and accidents should they occur.
What can happen if someone doesn't use professional carpet cleaners?
A lot of damage can occur if a certified technician or firm is not hired to do the job. They can over-saturate the fibers and promote an environment that may foster mold and other microbial growth in time. If using improper equipment, the fibers can be damaged, which would result in replacement being required much sooner. If the wrong cleansing agents are used, or they are not properly rinsed out, they may damage the fibers or make future soil adhere quicker, which will require cleaning more often than would otherwise be necessary.
What should a customer expect when they hire professional carpet cleaners?
Upon arrival, the technician will assess the carpeting. Once that is complete, the process can begin. First they will vacuum the floor during a process called dry soil removal. This removes any loose items in the flooring. Then soil suspension and extraction will take place. The technician uses a preconditioning agent that is mixed to separate the soil from the fibers. Various methods are employed to extract the soil from the flooring. Grooming may also be done to improve the fiber piles, matting, and to equally disperse protectors or conditioning agents. Then the drying process can begin. Carpets that have been professionally cleaned should be dry in less than 24 hours. Homeowners can assist in this process by ensuring the right temperature is maintained, and there is adequate ventilation.
When hiring a carpet cleaning technician, make sure that they have received their certification through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC). The IICRC is a globally-recognized organization that is the leader in certifying technicians and firms in the restoration, cleaning and inspection industry.

SERVPRO Tips: Summer storms are coming in Marshall, Starke, Pulaski and Fulton...Are you ready?
5/27/2020 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski & Fulton if you are ever in need after a natural disaster! We can help make it "Like it never even happened."

Why is my basement flooding?
4/30/2020 (Permalink)
As most homeowners know, unexpected problems are a reality of owning a house. Walking downstairs to find water in the basement after it rains can be a particularly unsettling sight that leaves many individuals unsure of what to do next. But, why is my basement flooding? Should you be asking yourself what to do when the basement floods, there are specific steps to take to get it back to normal and how to stop basement flooding.
Why is My Basement Flooding?
Unfortunately, there are a number of different reasons why your basement might flood. Learning the most commons reasons can help you determine how to stop basement flooding:
Rain-associated problems: while basement flooding can occur with dry weather, water in the basement after it rains is most likely. Cellar flooding after heavy rain can happen for a number of different reasons. For example, if your home is not properly graded, water will not be directed away from your house. This means water can find its way through cracks and holes into the basement, resulting in basement floods during heavy rain. In addition to improper grading, cracks in your home's foundation can result in cellar flooding after heavy rain.
It is important to regularly scan the walls of your basement for cracks, as they are one of the most common culprits of water in the basement after it rains. Sealing cracks is key for how to stop basement flooding. Another rain-associated challenge is clogged gutters and downspouts. When this happens, water will not be properly diverted far enough away from a house’s foundation, resulting in water in the basement after it rains.
Sump pump failure: A sump pump can be installed in a basement to collect water in a designated pit, then pump the water out and away from the basement to ensure it stays dry. When a sump pump isn’t working properly, whether due to a power outage or heavy rain, you are at risk for basement floods during heavy rain.
Sewer backup: A particularly unpleasant answer to “why is my basement flooding?” are basement floods during heavy rain caused by a sewer backup. When city sewers overflow, you might experience a flow of sewage back into your home through drains or toilets. This can then lead to flooding in the basement.

Office Culture is key!
2/20/2020 (Permalink)
In every single office across the globe, there is one thing in common; each and every office has a culture. Some good. Some bad...some toxic. What can you as a leader do to improve your culture? Today we will discuss three important facts that you can do to make the culture in your office one that fosters excellence, encourages constant improvement and where each and every person knows they are valued, and want to get to the next level.
Fact #1Your employees want to be the best.No one gets up in the morning and say to themselves, " I think I will be mediocre today." As a leader, it is your job to motivate your team to wake up and say "I am going to perform at my best today because I want to be the best." Notice I didn't say so I can make the most money...or I can be the manager. These things may happen based on an employee performing well, but the goal cannot be more money or more authority...these things change with time, but having a desire to perform at the highest level you are capable of never changes. Fact #2You will set the tone of the culture of your office, either on purpose, or on accident. Intentionality is one of the most important pieces for a leader in the office. Regardless of whether you think so or not, you are setting the culture every single day that people are experiencing, the only real question is, are you doing it on purpose or by accident? Being intentional about your influence in the office will allow you to build the culture that you want your company/office to have!Fact #3If you don't have and share goals with your employees, they will not ever meet them!It may seem like common sense, but if you don't have goals, and share those goals, your employees will never know about them and cannot work to achieve them. Setting goals with your office, and allowing them to be a part of this entire process, allows for everyone to be on the same page and know exactly what is expected, and how they can be a part of the success! Don't put off making the culture you want in your business! Start today and every day hereafter you will be one day closer to the culture that will enable you and your employees to grow and thrive!
Flooding Damage: Water & Mold
5/19/2019 (Permalink)
Following the 500 year flood over 1 year ago in February of 2018, thousands of homes were initiated with water, caused by a record snow fall, then the fast melt when we received a record rain fall.

Got mold? We can help!

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Mold Remediation in Marshall, Starke, Pulaski & Fulton Counties
5/11/2018 (Permalink)
Any commercial property, old or new, in our area can become rapidly infested with toxic levels of mold after the introduction of a source of moisture (not just from plumbing or roof leak either!) Consistently high levels of humidity indoors can be enough for mold to spawn a colony. Don't worry though, SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski, Fulton is here to help!
Once growth begins, it can take as little as 48 hours for a new colony of mold to spread throughout the house and reach levels high enough to cause allergic reactions and other health issues.
If you suspect your business may be “sick” with excess mold growth, the best solution is to call in a certified Environmentalist to assess, test and report a protocol for immediate remediation.
To Effectively Fight Mold, You Need to Understand Mold
Before you start Google searches of your area and begin collecting bids from local contractors for mold removal, you need to be aware of a few things.
First, mold spores exist everywhere. They are microscopic and travel through the air, similarly to pollen. They can come indoors through an open window, doorway, or even on your hair and clothing.
Second, contrary to the claims of some mold removal and remediation companies, it’s not physically possible to do a 100% mold removal for the reason we just mentioned above. It’s everywhere.
Third, mold only becomes harmful when it is allowed to colonize indoors. Colonization occurs when spores come in contact with a viable source of moisture. From there it settles in and starts to reproduce. Colonization is what brings the levels of mold up to potentially unhealthy concentrations. That’s where the trouble begins.
Consequently, before any effective mold removal can begin, its food source, i.e., moisture, has to be removed. That means fixing or replacing that leaky roof, addressing any plumbing issues, or utilizing a dehumidifier to keep indoor humidity under 45%.

SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski, Fulton: Commercial Mold Removal

Why do I have mold on my premises?
Mold in a commercial property can be caused by water damage or water intrusion from various sources such as a roof, window or plumbing leaks. The humidity caused by the presence of moisture combined with the warmth and poor ventilation in a property gives mold the perfect conditions to develop, and it can spread quickly if left unchecked. This can cause damage to internal structures, damage to products in storage and is also a serious health risk for you, your customers and your staff.
Should I Clean Mold Myself?
It may be tempting to clean the mold off of surfaces yourself, however, this will only remove the surface mold. Although an area may look clean of mold the root cause of the infestation and there will be spores within the surface that you will not be able to reach with household cleaning items. The spores that are left will continue to multiply and grow and the surface growth will soon be visible again. A few things you can do in the case of a mold infestation are:
- Turn off your HVAC system if you have one
- Make sure that movement in the area is limited to prevent spores from transferring elsewhere
- Do not touch or disturb the affected areas
- Make sure that you vacate the property
What Will a Mold Removal Team do?
If you have a mold infestation on your premises, you should call the SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski, Fulton expert mold removal team as soon as possible. They will be able to determine the cause of the mold growth and remove all spores from the property ensuring that it is fully eliminated.
Our team will carry out a preliminary assessment of the problem to ascertain the severity of the infestation and the underlying cause. There is a protocol we must follow to properly address the severity of the damage. The first step is to contact a certified Environmentalist who can test the area and report the specifics of the spore counts, the risks and the step-by-step remediation. S/He will then ensure that there is no cross contamination within the premises.
We are trained to perform the step-by-step remediation, provided by the Environmentalist. Mold isn’t always visible to the human eye so our experts will use special equipment to clean areas that are affected or that have high moisture levels that will encourage future mold growth.
Once the assessment and containment of the mold are complete, our team will then remove the mold at the source ensuring that there are no mold spores present within the premises to safeguard against further infestation. Finally, the team will remove the underlying cause of the infestation by repairing the affected area to stop the further intrusion of water.
If left untreated, mold can cause serious structural damage to your commercial property such as brickwork and drywall which could lead to more serious issues that will take longer and cost more to correct in addition to the loss of business while the premises are being treated and repaired. Call today! (574) 936-5849 for a consultation.

Conditions In Marshall, Starke, Pulaski & Fulton Counties Might Be Right For Mold
5/11/2018 (Permalink)
It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.
If the right conditions exist, mold will grow. Those conditions include:
- Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
- Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
- Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.
Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.
If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Marshall, Starke, Pulaski, Fulton to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.
