The area was contained to prevent spreading the mold, deconstruction, clean up and the drying process was started within a few hours.

Following the 500 year flood in February of 2018 thousands of homes were initiated with water, caused by a record snow fall, then the fast melt when we received a record rain fall.  The St. Joseph River has a flood level of 5'6", this year it hit 33'.  Water entered homes in many ways.  This home had water enter through a crack in the foundation at surface level.  The water came through the flowed down the wall damaging the drywall, insulation and stud work.  Unfortunately the home owner was not in town during the storm; the basement sat 2.5 weeks before anyone noticed the damage.  In that time mold had begun to grow on the entirety of the damaged area compounding the damage and clean up.  SERVPRO responded to the call in less than an hour. Whichever category the standing water in your home falls into does not depend solely on the color or visual appearance of the water, but also on the contents of it and any debris contained within. Here is a brief overview of what goes into each classification, and what each one can mean for your home.

Black Water

Black water is the most severe category of floodwater and is what we deal with most often for cases of flood damage that result from a storm. Black water is any water heavily contaminated with dirt, debris, microorganisms, chemicals, and many more hazardous substances. Most of the time, this type of water should be easy to identify with a dark brown or black color and murky appearance, but heavily contaminated water can sometimes appear gray or even somewhat clear in certain lighting conditions. SERVPRO tackled the aftermath of a fire in a warehouse. The SERVPRO team traveled to help clean and repair the aftermath of a large fire. This fire left water damage along with soot everywhere inside the building. In this instance, the warehouse was heavily stocked with supplies. The SERVPRO team brought in a crew strictly for inventory management. There are many things that the SERVPRO team does well when it comes to the restoration business. One of the many things our team members try to take care of is the items that were in the property when disaster occurs. Our team logs every item they feel that can be saved. 

One of the things that SERVPRO really focused on in this warehouse was the cleaning. Soot coated the ceilings in the warehouse. In this picture, we are seen cleaning all of the soot from the ceilings. Fortunately, the warehouse was able to stay open for hours of operation after the fire.

While you may be anxious to start cleaning after a fire, you may be doing more damage than good. If you have a generator on hand for power outages during severe weather storms, follow the safety tips below from the American Red Cross:

Never use a generator, grill or camp stove, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawl space, or any partially enclosed area.

To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use in rain or wet conditions. Do not touch the generator with wet hands.

Opening doors or windows and using fans will not prevent carbon monoxide (CO) buildup in the home. Although CO can’t be seen or smelled, it can rapidly lead to full incapacitation and death.

Even if you cannot smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed to CO. If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak while using a generator, get to fresh air immediately.

Install CO alarms in central locations on every level of your home or property and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.

Following the 500 year flood over 1 year ago in February of 2018, thousands of homes were initiated with water, caused by a record snow fall, then the fast melt when we received a record rain fall.  The St. Joseph River has a flood level of 5'6", this year it hit 33'.  Water entered homes in many ways.  This home had water enter through a crack in the foundation at surface level.  The water came through the flowed down the wall damaging the drywall, insulation and stud work.  Unfortunately the home owner was not in town during the storm; the basement sat 2.5 weeks before anyone noticed the damage.  In that time mold had begun to grow on the entirety of the damaged area compounding the damage and clean up.  SERVPRO responded to the call in less than an hour.
